Concerning Monday's meeting.

I have posted this to team captains in lieu of the expected email from Jason. I have also posted it on the message board in a fresh thread under the Committee and Disciplinary section. I would prefer to conduct all debate about it there rather than via text or e or land mail. If anybody doesn’t I would ask what do you want to hide?

I presume all recipients are au fait with the background if not, please either ask for clarifications on the message board or ignore this!

On Thursday morning prior to the meeting I sent Jason this email

Quote:
If I am mistaken, please ignore this post.

I presume a subject of this meeting is me, if so, please inform me specifically what is happening, if there are any 'charges', what they are, and what material evidence will be used.

Thanks

Steve.

On Saturday morning, having had no reply I forwarded it to Brenda, Simon and Neil, with the following text:

Quote:
Sent this to Jason a couple of days ago and have not received a reply. Obviously time is of the essence here, so I am forwarding it on to other members of the committeee as Jason may not have picked it up. Please could someone tell me what is happening?

Thanks

Steve

I did not receive anything, and so arrived at the Top House on Monday night, unprepared. At all times I try to argue my points, using evidence and logic. I don't always get it right, but at least flaws can be exposed/corrected when they are written. I did found it very tough to argue my case on Monday, for a multiplicity or reasons, but fundamentally because little physical evidence was produced and much hearsay or assumption was used.

I wish to address the following points here, and ask you to consider them when given any correspondence asking what should happen to me and my future participation in the FTQL.

That the committee’s treatment of the 'Scotty' Incident and the 'Steve Kidd postings' is inconsistent.

At sometime in 2006, during a 5TQL game, without provocation, Steve Scott 'lost it' crossed the room to poke his fingers in my chest, swore at and insulted me and then offered me outside for a fight.

I wrote a letter of complaint and the 5TQL to which the committee replied

Quote:
..In relation to your complaint regarding Mr Scott’s behaviour in relation to physical threats, we find the complaint to be justified and the complaint is therefore upheld.

We have considered possible or potential sanctions available for such a transgression. Taking into consideration issues such as this being the first time in the history of the Five Towns Quiz League that such an incident has had cause to be brought before this Committee (by anyone, not just the parties involved at this time), then we find occasion to write to Mr Scott and caution him as to his future behaviour in this or any other regard and that if there were any future repetition of unacceptable behaviours then further, more onerous sanctions may be applied..

I did not think this sufficient, and have, on several occasions bought it up on postings. I would have expected at least an apology and an undertaking of no repetition, and would have fully supported at least a couple of weeks ban. (We see precedents for this in many other more physical sports). Whatever.

In early May this year I posted on the forum

Quote:
..We really should be discussing this over a pint at a quiz.

To which Andrew Lyman replied

Quote:
Um...no we shouldn't...

and went on to refer to a previous comment of mine:

Quote:
"...Simon's new Gucci Loafers." Simon asked for an explanation of this upthread. Could you furnish that explanation, please?

At this time I 'lost it' (there had been friction between Andrew and myself for some time) and posted the following post:

Quote:
The reference to Simon's New Gucci Loafers was, along with "Entrats" (I meant "entrants") and "Trophies" a suggestion of things that might be bought with revenue generated by any 'extra-curricular' quizzes. Perhaps bath plugs, second mortgages or Sky porn would do just as well

To break it down a little bit more for any humourless, stamp out of the quiz at the end of the night without socialising with the opposition, let's use Jane Allen quotes to prove what a twat Steve Kidd is, let's not snap up the chance to host the finals night at the best venue imaginable but just dig your heels in and insist it is referred to the comiteeee, thus making work for everybody, accusing certain Eggheads of not having bottle on Millionaire when they themselves 'phoned a friend on Frederick Chopin airport when Paris wasn't even an option, readers who don't get me: - It was a joke, an aside to suggest that Simon, who created, and has single handedly carried this quiz league along for the five years I have been playing in it, might have used the money for his own ends. And d'you know what - I wouldn't give a flying fanny if he did, I just like to quiz, and I don't mind paying for it.

Andrew, you say "Um...no we shouldn't." when I suggest we should talk about this over a pint at a quiz. (You know I think the um bit is particularly puerile, in that you have ridiculed a perfectly reasonable thought/opinion, for no reason other than to have a dig at me). Why the hell not? I can think of very few things I'd rather do than go to a quiz with Peter, Simon, Diane, Barry, Neil, Debbie, in fact anybody apart from Scotty, and do a quiz, have a pint and talk about the five towns quiz league, the best goddam night of the week. Speak for yourself on this issue, you are welcome to sit in front of the PC screen all night whilst Simon runs round West Yorkshire delivering questions and falling out with me over declining to participate in a tidy up after your pedantry mission, but please don't diss me for suggesting sociability is desirable.

Now; that I regret posting it is true, that I regret the offence it caused is also true, that I used the synonyms 'Twat' and 'Fanny' was perhaps reckless (there are worse) and that to suggest Andrew is humourless is an example of that subjectivity I should avoid, but fundamentally, on re-reading the post many times, there is nothing, bar 'humourless' that does not stand up to scrutiny. Yes it is insulting, but I consider that Andrew started the insults and I over reacted. I did not lie, threaten or criticize anything that did not deserve criticism. And if you are reading this Andrew, prove you are not that person I describe and come back and play. Whatever. For writing a post which was essentially an awkward, uncomfortable nevertheless non slanderous bit of name calling (And name calling occurs many times on the site). I received a letter by registered post demanding an immediate apology. Which I gave, sincerely.

I considered the fact that I had to apologise for a post which was as you read above, yet in three years I had received no apology for being offered outside for a dust up, was, inconsistent. The committee appear to be indicating that offending people by telling the truth, however clumsily, is far worse than swearing, using profane verbal and physical abuse in the middle of an 5TQL game' (see above).

I considered being given the 'warning' over the posting an unjustified over reaction, and still imagine it to be more to do with personality than content. The warning was on paper, and I would appreciate an ecopy, nevertheless, I was told not to do a load of stuff, pending further action.

To illustrate an example of what I would hope a reasonable reaction to insults, Simon has suggested on the forum that I am 'completely brainless' amongst other things, yet I just reply to the post with evidence that I am not. That Andrew chooses to leave the league is regrettable but nevertheless his choice. He could have just as easily said 'I am not the things you describe' and done a service to everybody by enlightening us.

I wrote a letter to the committee on 4th July a letter outlining some reservations, with a stamped addressed envelope, to which I have not yet received a reply.

So.. When Simon posted on 29th September

Quote:
..Just one other question Debby (Aspland ed.) (apart from can we not ever do anything that you can find nothing to complain about?)..

Please bear in mind I had been waiting for a letter from the committee for nearly three months at this time on the issue of physical threats and had not received one. In reaction to this and Simon's post above I wrote, amongst other things,

Quote:
..How about..
..Being nice to people like Debbie and Neil who put up dead sensible posts? ..
..Any retarded lunkhead who offers another team member outside because he harbours a pathetic penis/brain/cool on TV envy complex, call him 'a very naughty boy'..

It has been pointed out by other league members that this was "obviously a reference to Steve Scott". Whilst writing it, of course, I could not help but picture the incident which provoked it, and perhaps should have written 'Any FTQL member who offers another team member outside call him 'a very naughty boy', but I didn't. If people recognise Scotty in this picture then I can not help that, if they do not, just shoot me down for being foolish enough to write ambiguously, it is a free forum. It was a reference to retarded lunkheads who would so such a thing, and if people correlate that to Scotty I rejoice, nevertheless it was deliberately not a reference to him.
I phoned up the help desk at the Metropolitan Police and asked ‘On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 absolutely nothing to worry about to ten being life imprisonment how might you treat the following complaints.
A called B a retarded lunkhead on a message board on the intenet
A  swore at B in a pub, shouted, poked him in the chest and offered  him outside for a fight.

The cop said “Obviously the second event is more serious” but wouldn’t give a number
I rang up an ex cop for a second opinion, and he said 3 and 6 respectively.
It seems that I am not alone in thinking the reaction of the 5TQL over the two incidents is inconsistent. (Not that the first incident ever happened)
Anyhoo, Scotty wrote a letter of complaint to the FTQL, and the meeting was called.

That the committee’s actions over the 'Scotty' Incident and the 'Steve Kidd postings' were/are disproportionate.

I consider the reaction to the Scotty Incident was weak and unsatisfactory. Simon considers they were sufficient and states that in any future incidents he thinks the comittee should merely admonish the offender and seek no apology or take any sanction.

Quote:
Me: What action do you, Simon Curtis, think should be taken if a person, retarded lunkhead or not, offers other team members outside over an issue of the rules which he doesn't understand?

Simon: The action we took at the time.

I hope you agree this is a disproportionately small reaction to an action that would not be tolerated in most games and sports.

I consider the reaction to my postings by the committee disproportionately inflated. Completely ridiculous

We are actually mooting a sine die here, a lifetime ban, for what? "Humorless", "Retarded Lunkhead" "Penis Envy" "Twat" and "Fanny"? What do we propose for "Completely Brainless"? 20 years? Or could it be that some people hate me so much they are prepared to take out someone who loves the league, is responsible for a quarter of the teams in the league being there, who has been the most vociferous member when it comes to praising what is done right, who has on Radio stated that Mondays are his favourite night of the week, the major poster on the message boards, to take me out as a part of some stupid vendetta? After the meeting had finished on Monday it seemed that just two options were on the cards, the lifetime ban or six months from the message boards. Nothing else!

Whatever your attitudes towards me as a person are immaterial, you will be asked to choose. That I think this could have been settled a long time ago with relative ease is not a crazy hypothesis. That you are being asked for your opinions I would ask you to consider that I have nothing more to answer for other than some of the things I write are not good, and sometimes in life in general I should perhaps take a step back before I say something. I would also urge you to suggest to the committee to consider criticisms more pragmatically and saving us all a lot of time and angst.
What would you rather have in your league?
• Lifetime Bans for poor postings
• Carte Blanche for people to threaten you whilst playing quizzes
• Both
• Neither
Thanks for reading

Steve Kidd

Brian, there is a reason why the forum account you have referred to has been deleted and as your team's email contact you will be getting an email as sent to all Captains informing of the Committee's decision re the Captain's meeting and indicative vote result etc very soon.  I understand from Neil Aspland, who has conducted this whole matter, that it will be sometime this evening (Wed 21/10/09).

A letter in the Pontefract & Castleford Express this week offers the following advice to a regular correspondent: "It is not always wise to say what you think all the time."

Never was a truer word spoken, and never was it spoken too late. The recipient of this piece of advice, you see, is Mr Steve Kidd.

Neil.
