Yes, I know it is not FTQL, but whatever. Well done our team, I can not remember when we have played quite as well and had the rub of the green so much. Four times in the semis and twice in the final we were ready to give a return answer that was absolutely wrong, but were put out of our embarrassment by our opposition answering correctly. Barry's many 'sures' were all sure, Lee, as usual delivered some absolutely outstanding knowlege (Ting Tings, Zutons), Ian, just like in the last final, was solid as a rock and anchored the individual rounds and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I must admit to a degree of that German thing (Sheudenfreud??) to see Peter in the most agony since his leg went 'game'. I love that guy, but as Ray Stevens said "Everything is Beautiful"

Thanks to all involved and special thanks to those who came down and weren't competing. We must work on getting people down for these gigs, King's Croft was excellent from this aspect. The Food on Wednesday was absolutely fantastic - who ate all the prawns?

Thanks for a great summer season.

Steve Kidd

Yes, an excellent Summer Quiz League (June to September, for those not yet involved !), with excellent questions every week, set by Darren, the same bloke that does them for the FTQL.

A sound thrashing for my team in the Cup Final, as subtely implied by Mr Kidd (wasn't that the name of a very camp Bond villain, by the way ?).

To be honest, with Barry's appearances of late, I'm reminded of the question put to tennis player Peter Fleming, when asked if he and McEnroe were the best Doubles team of their era. Fleming replied that McEnroe and ANYBODY were the best Doubles team ! It's almost got to the point that Barry and any 3 quizzers in his team would rack up a top score, such is his (increasing) phenomenal quiz ability !

As for getting people down to watch. Well, firstly, I'm glad there wasn't a crowd Wink , but secondly, if people don't want to put something back into our FTQL, and come to our AGM, I doubt they'll put themselves out by watching a quiz match, or even joining in a "Mastermind" type competition. Apathy rules, OK, which I'm sure any prospective Parliamentary candidate would tell you !

Hey Peter! Our own little corner of cyberspace. In Cyberspace no one can see you post! Thank goodness Simmons won't see your latest hagiography.
In the pairs event last year I seem to recall that Keith and myself won the 'league' and only got royally screwed in the "I know, let's ignore the stick-end round and make it a game of chance" play off.

Please put up a comment on my site, perhaps about the Beer crates.

I really like this little message board here, even if it is only you and I with Simon blundering through on odd occasions. What can we do to encourage Andrew to start participating again? (Yes I know, 'don't put up stupid messages Steve' would be a good start) but all that is gone.

The way I see it, Andrew has a beef with me, I have a beef with Scotty. Both of us do not wish to see the latter. I have apologised in writing for what I posted, under threat of further action from the league, but apart from that, Andrew could easily strike back with the pen, after all, Andrews dexterity with such was what pre-empted my post. On the other hand, you know what happened with Scotty and I, and up to this point, AFAIK, it seems he is welcome to do the same again. Monday nights I like to reserve for quizzes, and I would wish to perhaps reserve another night for Monkey-Boxing.

Do you reckon Wednesdays would be good now the summer league has finished on such a high note?

Your friend and admirer,

Steve

Steve Steve Steve.....

"In the pairs event last year I seem to recall that Keith and myself won the 'league' and only got royally screwed in the "I know, let's ignore the stick-end round and make it a game of chance" play off. "

.......and I once bowled out Geoff Boycott in a Charity "tip and run" cricket match, but that doesn't make me Freddie Bleedin' Truman !

A little over the top, I know, but I hope you get my point.

Barry is by some distance the best quizzer in our league, and the tougher the quiz, the better he is. To think otherwise is churlish, and for a member of the same team as him to not acknowledge this, a tad ungracious. And why wouldn't he be. It's his job, he gets paid money for quizzes, so goes to great lengths to improve. I remember him telling me he used to revise for up to five hours a day for an important quiz, and that was BEFORE he became an Egghead. The more you practice, the better (and luckier, to quote Gary Player) you get. Fair play to Barry, he deserves all the praise he gets, in my book.

The reason I called for an end to this Forum (rather than the entire website) was to put a stop to the barbed comments, from others, but notably, you. For you to write what you did about Andrew was unforgiveable, and so it seems, as Andrew will not forgive you. It's also interesting that you only apologised "under threat of further action from the league". Presumably, you would not have apologised had this threat not been made. What were you thinking ???

On a personal level, I'm very disappointed that Andrew has packed in, as he was a very valuable member of our team, both for his undoubted quiz knowledge, but also (and more importantly) because he was terrific company. Added to that, he was the mainstay of this website - very informative, top communicator, and generally (along with Simon) keeping it a valuable resource.

"Andrew could strike back with the pen". What's the point. This quiz league is a hobby, meant to be fun, and I suppose he thought "F*ck this, I'm not busting a gut to do the right thing, putting myself in the firing line etc etc", only for some so-and-so to trash talk me for the whole world to see. That's my take on it.

Finally, why you keep bringing up the Scotty incident of 3/4 years ago I don't know. It's now on 2 current threads. As far as I know, there's only one person happy to keep this issue bubbling. Why ? Is it to drive Scotty away too ? At this rate, you'll be left in a quiz league of just one team, with just one player in it !!

You're a nice bloke Steve, but very hard work at times.

There is no doubt whatsoever in my mind that Barry is the stand out player in the league, the first one I would pick, and any reference I make to him not being such is entirely in jest. Your Geoff Boycott analogy is perfect. I was hoping that would be taken as read when talking about Keith and myself that I was being entirely flippant.

Regarding my post about Andrew (which I regret) I will state here and now I wish I had not written it, and apologise unreservedly for it. It was thoughtless and did not get my point across. This is not under duress from the comiteeeee, it is my considered opinion. Mine, however, was not the first barb. And very little is unforgiveable except for people who are not prepared to forgive.

If I could couple the website/scotty issues together. I refer to it (having tried several times privately to resolve it) publicly because I would like to be able to quiz without the rules being broken, and without me being threatened or my team mates frightened. This is a big deal to me, for which the league has not taken any visible action. Do you, Peter, think Scotty's behaviour of that night should be tolerated? Personally I consider the website a far more civilised forum for such disputes.

Even if posts do start 'Steve Steve Steve'

And well done Peter (I mean this absolutely) for getting stuck in - I do deserve it, and from somebody like you it carries far more creedence.

Steve (Solely responsible for the presence of four teams in the league).

As much as i dont want to be embroiled in keeping this issue alive Steve, as you are quite aware the committee took the action it deemed appropriate at the time and you were fully informed of this decision, which i believe Simon has referred to a lot more eloquently than I on the other string mentioning this issue.
As a member of the aforementioned committee I fully supported the action taken at the time which was as I recall totally without precedent and gladly no similar instances have since occurred, i do however believe that when the rules are deemed broken, we as a committee do our utmost to come to a sensible and fair decision and as someone a lot cleverer than myself once said, to err is human, to forgive divine!
