If Simon said "we are having a Mastermind competition, to take place on one Monday night, and the the entry fee was

* £5
+ A set of 20 specialist subject questions
+ Verifying two other sets of specialist subject questions
+ 20 general knowledge questions to put inthe pot"

I would say "what's the deadline?"

Does anybody feel the same way?

Please don't let Barry set my questions on 'The Police Squad career of lieutenant Frank Drebbin'

As I've mentioned previously, I would be keen to "make one in", but  fear that such a Mastermind event would prove an unattractive prospect to most.

Our recent "15-to-1" competitions proved very popular (more than 15 people bought tickets to enter, if I recall), perhaps as the game itself seemed less intimidating, less "elitist", more fun, and more "winnable".

Also, as a money-raising exercise for the league, £5 per entrant to a Mastermind competition might appear a big money-spinner, but not if only 3 people took part.

Such an additional competition under the banner of a FTQL event ought to be inclusive, and not an exercise whereby the same few "activists" jockey for supremacy.

Is that a "i'm in" Peter?

Why worry about numbers? If only one person is interested, given my first post then there is no competition. If two people or more were interested we do, providing somebody shuffles up the the GK, plus there is £5 in the prize kitty per entry for the entrats/trophies/Simon's new Gucci Loafers. I would like to enter and it would be an honour to be beaten by You, Barry, Diane, Lee, Andrew, John, Neal, Geoff Swain or any other member of the league apart from cheating retards.

If other people are disinclined to put themselves up for it, that is their call - human behaviour becomes more mystifying to me as I get older. How about this for a twist. 20 specialist knowledge and then 40 on the buzzer? (Two competitors then get

a) More questions
b) A perfec tly balanced GK set in terms of A and B questions!)

I love you Peter, but your post was very negative - more 'This would not work because' rather than 'this could work if...'

For the third time, yes, I would take part in any Mastermind competition, but my preference for any additional event to the FTQL calendar would be a 15-to-1 competition, because.........

a. We've done it before, for several years, and it proved popular
b. It would be much less work to set questions
c. There is less importance on setting balanced questions
d. It would attract more participants than Mastermind, in my opinon

As mentioned previously, I would not want any additional quiz competition to replace the Pairs Competition on Handicap Cup Final night, as this is the best quiz of our season, again, in my opinion.

So, it's another matter where we would slot in Mastermind, 15-to-1, or anything else, to the FTQL quiz calendar.

Peter and all,

15 to 1 or Mastermind would be good, I'd be well up for either. I think a point I am trying to make is; we could do a Mastermind straight away given a deadline and the entry conditions I suggested above. 15 :1 would take a little, but by no means impossible, amount of organisation, if only to get entries - would you take on the organisation? As a reflection on the respective TV incarnations of both games, both of them always throw up good winners, but not necesarily the best, as good contestants can fall by the wayside (More so with 15:1). Trevor Montague, Darren Martin and Steve Kidd are all victims of the two strikes and out first round of William G's Tea Time quiz fest.

Which brings me to the point  - Good players have feelings too! - In this thread and a few others you, laudably, consider the feelings of those who you percieve might feel disadvantaged in a scratch comp. What I would love is both handicapped and scratch events. It works at the golf club, It would work here. Meritocracy is good, and I wish we saw more of it in the world in general as well as Quiz. Because of the dynamic nature of quiz teams, any team league competition would be impractical to handicap. The cup format is much better for this, though perhaps a one off night might also work. An individual handicap championship might be great fun. To draw the golf analogy once again, we might be able to assess a semi workable handicap for each player who was (or wasn't) interested, compiled from individual scores over the last two or three years.

Just by way of example I shall include the top 14 on the handicap list of Light Speed Quiz from 2004 http://www.lsq.us/handicaps.htm

Name Played Won (£) Handicap
Pat Gibson 9 200 -1
Steve Kidd 15 250 0
Kevin Ashman 4 140 0
Mark Bytheway 4 130 1
Karl Whelan 1 50 6
Barry Simmons 4 80 6
Darren Martin 7 100 7
Tim Westcott 1 30 8
Steve Pearson 2 30 9
Andrew Teal 1 20 9
Mark Labbett 3 30 10
Mark Kerr        9 80 11
Alan Gibbs 3 20 11
Chris Jones 2 0 12

Are you familiar with any of these names?

We really should be discussing this over a pint at a quiz.

Um...no we shouldn't. If you want to run this under the auspices of the Five Towns Quiz League, bring a proposal to the AGM and we'll discuss it there. Just like I did with the Pairs competition when it replaced the Fifteen-to-One competition. Either tout it in addition to, or as a replacement for any of the league events. If passed by the membership, Simon will plan a week into the league programme for it and it will be given the support that Simon gives to all League-sponsored events; flyers in the question packs, text messages to all teams to remind them, etc. etc.

Simon asked for an explanation of this upthread. Could you furnish that explanation, please?

Andrew is dead right.

I would certainly be in favour of extra "fun" events, such as Mastermind, 15-to-1, or even "a bit of bully", but this is one for the AGM.

The reference to Simon's New Gucci Loafers was, along with "Entrats" (I meant "entrants") and "Trophies" a suggestion of things that might be bought with revenue generated by any 'extra-curricular' quizzes. Perhaps bath plugs, second mortgages or Sky porn would do just as well

To break it down a little bit more for any humourless, stamp out of the quiz at the end of the night without socialising with the opposition, let's use Jane Allen quotes to prove what a twat Steve Kidd is, let's not snap up the chance to host the the finals night at the best venue imaginable but just dig your heels in and insist it is referred to the comiteeee, thus making work for everybody, accusing certain Eggheads of not having bottle on Millionaire when they themselves 'phoned a friend on Frederick Chopin airport when Paris wasn't even an option, readers who don't get me: - It was a joke, an aside to suggest that Simon, who created, and has single handedly carried this quiz league along for the five years I have been playing in it, might have used the money for his own ends. And d'you know what - I wouldn't give a flying fanny if he did, I just like to quiz, and I don't mind paying for it.

Andrew, you say "Um...no we shouldn't." when I suggest we should talk about this over a pint at a quiz. (You know I think the um bit is particularly purile, in that you have ridiculed a perfectly reasonable thought/opinion, for no reason other than to have a dig at me). Why the hell not? I can think of very few things I'd rather do than go to a quiz with Peter, Simon, Diane, Barry, Neil, Debbie, in fact anybody apart from Scotty, and do a quiz, have a pint and talk about the five towns quiz league, the best goddam night of the week. Speak for yourself on this issue, you are welcome to sit in front of the PC screen all night whilst Simon runs round West Yorkshire delivering questions and falling out with me over declining to participate in a tidy up after your pedantry mission, but please don't diss me for suggesting sociablity is disireable.

In response to the discussion about a 'Mastermind' game, I say bring it on.There must be many and various special interests held by our members lets see what they are and give people chance to show off a bit.We all like to think we're good at something no matter how obscure and,you never know,we may all learn something new.Incidentally no jokes about Jim Carey.

Having seen all the comments about this, I'm sure we'll look at something of this nature for next season.

And welcome to the forum Don.
